The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking an Administrative Assistant to provide administrative support to the School Superintendent for the overall operation of the school. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Office management and clericals tasks, to include recording of minutes in various meetings
- Assist with public relations and outreach activities
- Assist with submission of grants in State system and tracking
- Prepare newsletters and various other publications for the school, both internal and external
- Coordinate all activities of the VSDB Print Shop
- Coordinate projects and chair committees as required
- Compile and analyze information and prepare reports
- Purchase and monitor of funds
- Prepare payroll documentation
- Maintain the superintendent’s calendar and departmental files
- Assist visitors and make contacts with external agencies
- Coordinate opening of school and graduation activities
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate. An Associates Degree is preferred.
- Training, experience, or a combination of both in secretarial services, public relations, desktop publishing and office management.
- Advanced clerical and desktop publishing skills.
- Advanced computer skills to include proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications; proficiency in software to use when preparing Braille materials for the agency, as well as the ability to operate a TDD machine.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret policies and procedures.
- Skills necessary to represent the agency and project a positive image.
- Knowledge of agency operation and mission to include positive public relations activities.
- Proficiency level of “Survival” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
