The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Life to provide leadership and supervision of residential services. This position supervises the evening residential programs for students with sensory-impairment and other disabilities. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Director of Student Life with residential program management
- Program implementation and supervision
- Compliance with facilities use management requirements
- Documentation and recordkeeping
- Effective communication and professional/community relations
- On-going staff development
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited college or university in sociology, psychology, special education, rehabilitation or a related discipline required
- A valid Virginia Teaching license issued by the Board of Education with specialization in MR, VI, HI or SD is preferred
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTR), preferred
- Demonstrated leadership in program development, supervision and evaluation
- Experience working with children with disabilities, residential programs, and behavior management
- Demonstrated ability to implement a comprehensive structured program of care in a safe, nurturing environment based on principles, methods and practices involved in residential and therapeutic developmental services
- Experience in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) particularly goals and objectives related to daily living skills
- Experience in developing and implementing behavioral intervention plans and building positive supports in residential environments, preferred
- Knowledge of behavioral management techniques and counseling principles
- Knowledge of child development theory, child care practices the needs of children with sensory impairment
- Knowledge of managing services to children with complex medical needs
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
- CPR and First Aid Certification or agreement to obtain within six months of employment
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
