The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking an Assistant Principal to provide a quality instructional program to children with deafness and/or blindness and significant cognitive impairment. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Organize, maintain and evaluate instructional programs
- Supervise staff and program implementation
- Oversee compliance with applicable licensure standards
- Monitor and evaluate staff performance and student achievement
- Assist with the coordination and implementation of state assessment system
- Serve as administrative designee for Individualized Educational Program (IEP) meetings
- Plan in-service training and professional development for staff
- Develop and implement the department budget
- Foster and maintain positive working relationships with staff, community and others
Minimum Qualifications:
- Masters degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 (specialization within Special Education deafness in the area of severe disabilities is preferred). Candidates without education in deafness and/or blindness and moderate to severe disabilities must be willing to complete coursework in these areas. Experience in teaching children with significant cognitive impairment is preferred
- Ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for children with significant cognitive impairment
- Knowledge of child growth and development, and special needs of children with disabilities
- Knowledge of the Standards of Learning (SOL) and curriculum development
- Ability to supervise staff and work using a team approach
- Ability to communicate, organize and interact with people
- Knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management
- Experience as a leader in education and as a full-time classroom teacher in an accredited school
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to interact on a physical level with children and to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending , and climbing
