The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Behavior Management Specialist to provide behavior management consultation and develop appropriate intervention programs for students. This is a 10-month position with assigned shift hours from 2:00pm – 11:00pm Monday through Thursday and 6:30pm – 10:30pm on Sunday. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Respond to and de-escalate behavior of students during crisis/behavior incidents.
- Coordinate student referrals for outside services.
- Develop behavior intervention plans which address individual needs of students.
- Supervise student suspensions, time-out assignments, etc.
- Use appropriate intervention strategies such as discussion, problem solving and role playing.
- Serve as a member of the inter-disciplinary team.
- Assist in evaluation and interpretation of information concerning students.
- Provide consultation to teachers, staff and parents about appropriate methods for addressing student behaviors or concern.
- Maintain records of behavior intervention and required documentation.
- Provide staff development and training in areas of behavior management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, social work, psychology, sociology or related field. Candidates who hold a Bachelor’s Degree and have considerable experience and training in behavior management, and experience with students who have sensory impairment may be considered.
- Some experience working with disabled children in a teaching environment and using behavior management techniques is preferred.
- Knowledge of counseling theory and principles and practices of counseling and developing a treatment plan.
- Knowledge of child growth and development, the acquisition of social skills the special needs of children with disabilities.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate behavioral management techniques and establishment of positive behavior supports.
- Ability to perform evaluative behavioral observations and write reports of observations.
- Knowledge of the requirements for assessment of children with disabilities and the delivery of special education and related services.
- Ability to intervene appropriately in emergency or crisis situations.
- Consultation skills sufficient to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents and other professionals.
- Ability to plan and organize work, follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach.
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.

- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
