The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Career and Technical Education Teacher to develop and implement a horticulture program for students who are deaf, blind and have significant cognitive disabilities and/or physical disabilities. This position is for Academic Year 2008-2009 beginning 8/11/2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Program development
- Curriculum/SOL management and planning
- Instructional implementation
- Classroom organization and management
- Evaluation, reporting and recordkeeping
- Communication and professional/community relations
- Participation in staff development
- Development of Individualized Educational Programs (IEP)
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university, Masters Degree preferred.
- Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in career and technical education - agricultural education. The selected candidate will also be required to secure an additional endorsement in the applicable area of sensory impairment.
- Prefer experience in teaching in a classroom setting with special needs students who have deafness, blindness and cognitive and/or physical impairments.
- Ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for children with deafness, blindness and other disabilities.
- Knowledge of child growth and development, and special needs of children disabilities.
- Ability to develop effective instructional strategies and methods and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to teach student leadership skills, organize and manage an effective co-curricular student organization (FFA) and implement the organization’s activities as an integral part of instruction.
- Knowledge of agricultural competencies needed by secondary students to be successful in continuing their education and entering a related occupation in the area of horticulture.
- Safe operation, repair and maintenance of equipment, tools and machinery used in agriculture.
- Knowledge of appropriate instructional technology and microcomputer applications.
- Ability to plan and organize work, follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach.
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification required or must be obtained per school policies.
- Valid driver’s license, selected candidate will be required to obtain commercial driver’s license (CDL)
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to interact on a physical level with children and to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending , and climbing.
