The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Grounds Worker/Maintenance Technician to provide general maintenance service including general repair work, grounds work and support for trade’s areas.
Responsibilities include:
- Grounds maintenance
- Building maintenance
- Conducting inspections to identify needs/deficiencies
- Preventive maintenance and extended services
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate (An equivalent amount of applicable training and experience may substitute for the educational requirement)
- Virginia Driver’s License or eligibility to obtain
- Certification for the application of herbicides or agreement to obtain this certification within six months of employment
- Certification in first Aid and CPR or agreement to obtain this certification within three months
- Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques, practices and equipment, and related safety practices
- Knowledge of horticultural practices and techniques applicable to the layout and upkeep of gardens and grounds
- Skill in operating vehicles and tractors with various attachments
- Ability to understand and carryout oral and written directions independently
- Willingness to work various shifts/overtime, which may include weekends and holidays
- Ability to follow safety practices
- Willingness to acquire knowledge of small power equipment and perform preventive and general maintenance on equipment
- Proficiency level of “Novice” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Scale or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 45-100 pounds, perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending and climbing, and tolerate various chemicals and weather conditions
