The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking Interpreters for the Deaf to provide interpreting and transliterating services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing at a residential school. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Interpreting services for children and adults including oral transliteration services, cued language, transliteration services sign language transliteration and interpreting services and transcription services such as communication access real-time translation (CART), C-Print and TypeWell
- Sign language evaluation for staff
- Maintaining documentation of interpreting needs
- Program planning
- Communication and professional/community relations
- Ongoing staff development
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in Interpreting, completion of an interpreter training program, or equivalent amount of training and experience, Bachelors degree preferred
- For provision of interpreting services for children using sign language: Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III or any state or national certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as equivalent to or exceeding the VQAS Level III. NAD-RID National Interpreter Certification preferred
- For interpreting services for children requiring oral interpreting, minimum requirements for competency on the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening’s written assessment of the Code of Ethics and hold a national Oral Interpreter Credential (OIC)
- Demonstrated competence with interpreting/transliterating in both individual and group situations
- Knowledge of deaf culture and needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing
- Ability to organize and prioritize work
- Ability to follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach
- Ability to maintain confidential information and abide by special education regulations governing services to students with disabilities and professional ethics
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
