The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Recreational Therapist to plan, direct and coordinate medically approved recreation programs for students with blindness, deafness and significant cognitive impairment. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Evaluates and assesses student’s needs based on interests and abilities
- Facilitates development of new skills for students in daily living, leisure skills, adaptive sports, therapeutic art, sensory stimulation and community functioning through individual and small group interventions
- Designs and implements programs in concert with occupational and physical therapy goals of students
- Serves as a resource to staff regarding play, development, adjustment to illness, medical treatment and/or disability
- Consults and trains with peer mentors, parents, staff and other professionals
- Case management and recordkeeping
- Communication and professional/community relations
- On-going staff development
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an approved program in therapeutic recreation
- Hold or be eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification required or must be obtained per school policies.
- Experience in providing recreational therapy to students with sensory-impairment and significant cognitive disabilities and physical disabilities preferred
- Knowledge of child growth and development, behavior management and special needs of children with disabilities
- Knowledge of human behavior and individual differences in abilities; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
- Ability to assess student needs and design appropriate recreational therapy
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions
- Knowledge of the principles and methods for therapeutic intervention, teaching and instruction for individuals with disabilities and the measurement of student progress
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
- Ability to plan and organize work
- Ability to follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
