The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Registered Nurse - Substitute to promote and maintain the optimum health of deaf and blind children in a residential setting. This is a part-time wage position without benefits limited to 1500 hours per year. This is an on-call position which will provide coverage in the absence of the regular nursing staff over three shifts (7am to 3pm, 3pm to 11pm and 11pm to 7am.), as required.
Responsibilities include:
- Assess students’ health needs and administer medication and treatment as appropriate
- Refer students to appropriate medical follow-up based on assessment and identified needs
- Communicate health needs to physicians, parents, and school personnel
- Promote wellness with all students and conduct mandated health screenings
- Document pertinent observations, assessments, orders and medical care delivered to students, and maintain medical records according to established standards
- Identify needs, develop plans and utilize all available resources for education of students and staff in health and safety issues
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing program
- Hold or be eligible for a current Registered Nursing License issued by the Virginia State Board of Nursing
- Experience working in pediatric health care and with students with sensory-impaired disabilities is preferred
- Knowledge of principles and practices of professional nursing
- Knowledge of current trends and practice standards in pediatric nursing, school nursing and the health care delivery system
- Knowledge of the Medicaid Reimbursement Program for Virginia schools
- Ability to perform physical assessments and make treatment decisions/plans based on symptoms
- Ability to interpret and follow physicians’ orders
- Considerable knowledge of medical terminology, first aid treatment, medications and basic health care practices
- Ability to document all interventions, treatments, and significant information in appropriate terminology
- Ability to administer all medications and treatments safely and accurately
- Ability to make sound judgments and effect appropriate interventions in an emergency situation
- Proficiency level of “Intermediate” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to interact on a physical level with children and to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending , and climbing
