The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking Residential Advisors to provide essential direct care residential services for students with sensory impairment and moderate to severe mental retardation or severe disabilities. These are 10-month positions with full state benefits. Hours vary depending on bus schedule. These positions are for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide a structured daily routine for sensory impaired students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities.
- Plan educational, recreational and/or leisure time activities.
- Implement goals and objectives of the Individualized Education Program.
- Provide personal care for students and assist with personal hygiene practices.
- Assist student with individual school activities and programs of individual student interest.
- Implement student Behavior Intervention Plans and adhere to behavior management policies and procedures.
- Evaluate student progress and accurately record information that measures progress towards completion of written goals and objectives.
- Provide accurate written reports/logs of activities and incidents with students.
- Supervise students on scheduled bus routes to ensure safety and appropriate conduct.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or General Education Development Certificate. Associate degree preferred.
- Prior experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Human Services Assistant is preferred.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification is required or must be obtained in accordance with school policies.
- Ability to interact with students in a patient, positive and sensitive manner in order to provide for their direct care and development.
- Ability to carry out instructional, personal care and support tasks, and to plan and implement activity programs for students.
- Ability to work with students with behavioral difficulties and acute medical needs.
- Skill in behavior management or willingness to attend training to acquire these techniques.
- Ability to work independently and follow school policies and procedures.
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to interact on a physical level with children and assist with the transportation of children via buses.
