The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Residential Supervisor to serve as a member of an administrative team with specific responsibility to supervise and provide essential direct care residential services for students with sensory impairment and moderate to severe mental retardation or severe disabilities. This is a 10-month position with normal hours from 10:30pm – 7:30am Sunday through Thursday. This position is for Academic Year 2008 – 2009 beginning August 2008. As with all school positions, funding is contingent upon final approval of the budget by the Governor and General Assembly.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide leadership in the establishment of a positive dormitory environment.
- Ensure that a structured program of care is implemented to meet the physical, social and emotional needs of children.
- Provide direct care services, as assigned.
- Support instructional programs in the dorms and ensure consistent implementation of the students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Collaborate with relevant personnel to accommodate individual student needs.
- Mediate staff concerns and provide direction and counseling for staff as needed.
- Ensure implementation of natural supports for the program, positive behavioral supports for students and individual student behavior intervention plans.
- Ensure that staff employ appropriate interpersonal skills and behavior management techniques with students at all times.
- Meet established guidelines for documenting student progress, as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A baccalaureate degree in social work or psychology and two years of professional experience working with children one year of which must have been in a residential facility for children; a high school diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (GED) and a minimum of five years professional experience working with children with at least two years in a residential facility for children; or a equivalent combination of education and experience working with children.
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal special education and residential facility licensure laws. Knowledge of the Virginia Standards for Interdepartmental Regulations of Children’s Residential Facilities is preferred.
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and practices involved in residential and therapeutic/developmental services. Supervisory experience in a residential setting is preferred.
- Ability to provide supervision for the implementation of a comprehensive, structured residential program.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all staff, parents, families and community members.
- Ability to interact with students in a patient, positive and sensitive manner in order to provide for their direct care and development.
- Skill in behavior management or willingness to attend training to acquire needed competencies.
- Ability to follow school policies and work using a team approach.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification is required or must be obtained in accordance with school policies.
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency. Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.
