The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Physical Education Teacher to provide a quality instructional program to students with deafness and other disabilities. This position is for Academic Year 2008-2009 beginning 8/11/2008.
Responsibilities include:
- Curriculum/SOL Management and Planning
- Instructional implementation
- Classroom organization and management
- Evaluation, reporting and recordkeeping
- Communication and professional/community relations
- Participation in staff development
- Development of Individualized Educational Programs (IEP)
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university – Masters Degree preferred.
- Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in health and physical education preK-12. The selected candidate will also be required to obtain an additional endorsement in the applicable area of sensory impairment and an add-on endorsement in Driver Education.
- Must meet the “highly qualified” criteria established by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 and No Child Left Behind requirements for the VSDB
- Current CPR and First Aid certification required or must be obtained per school policies
- Ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and students with significant cognitive impairments
- Knowledge of child growth and development, and special needs of children with disabilities
- Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
- Ability to plan and organize work
- Ability to follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach
- Knowledge of assistive technology to enhance communication and learning
- Prefer experience in a classroom setting with students who are deaf or hard of hearing and students with significant cognitive impairments
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to interact on a physical level with children and to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending , and climbing
