The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton is seeking a Transportation/Maintenance Worker to transport students to and from their homes to the school and during school activities in a safe and orderly manner, and to maintain all vehicles according to established standards.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide transportation for students.
- Perform vehicle maintenance.
- Provide transportation support for faculty and other staff drivers for field trips and other activities.
- Maintain documentation regarding vehicle usage and maintenance.
- Assist Operations Department in all areas of operation including painting, grounds work including mowing or trim work, trades areas, emergencies, inclement weather, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or General Education Development Certificate or equivalent amount of training and experience.
- Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement.
- Experience in the operation of a 38 passenger bus (or larger) and some general maintenance experience.
- Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of vehicles, and associated safety practices.
- Sufficient knowledge of state driving laws and the use of road maps to transport children in a safe and timely manner.
- Working knowledge of small power equipment and the mechanical ability to perform preventative and general maintenance on equipment.
- Working knowledge of grounds and general maintenance, and associated safety practices.
- Proficiency level of “Survival” in American Sign Language (ASL) as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.
- Must be willing to work various shifts during emergencies and/or to meet agency needs.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 45-100 pounds, perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing, and tolerate various chemicals and weather conditions.
